Types of Structural Steel Framework
Wall bearing framing
Wall bearing framing requires the erection of masonry walls on the perimeter and interior of the building. Structural steel members are then anchored on the masonry walls using bearing and end steel plates and anchor bolts. Certain factors will impact the design and construction of the wall bearing framing, for example the load intensity.
Skeleton framing
Skeleton framing is composed of connected steel beams and columns. Walls are made as a curtain wall with no load-bearing capabilities. Typically, skeleton framing comprises of spandrel beams, main or primary beams, intermediate or secondary beams, wall columns and interior columns, and reinforced concrete slab.
Long span framing
A long span is one that exceeds 12m. It can provide flexible floor space and column-free internal spaces, while reducing the on-site construction period. It also allows for spaces to be suitable for mixed use. Typically, long-span framing is ideal for large industrial buildings, auditoriums, theatres, and exhibition spaces.
Steel columns
Based on types of shape
1. Square or rectangular columns - These RCC columns are extensively used to construct heavy structures and buildings. Owing to the simplicity of shuttering and supporting it from collapsing due to pressure while the concrete is still in flowable condition, it is easier to manufacture and cast rectangular or square columns than circular ones. The coumns are also cost-effective as compared to other columns.
2. Circular columns - Circular columns are typically utilised in the piling and elevation of buildings for aesthetic purposes. A circular column's bending resistance is often higher than a square or rectangular column since it uses more than four longitudinal steel bars as reinforcement. Round columns are generally utilised as bridge pillars due to good resistance against deflection.
3. L shaped - These columns are simple to create and cast, and because of the support they offer, they are frequently an excellent option for giant constructions like buildings. The construction workers use these columns to support corner boundary walls.
